Overeem's Out, and Frank Mir's in at UFC 146
With everyone aware of Alistair Overeem's positive pre-fight drug test, and his upcoming licensing hearing on April 24th. It looked as though we would wait with the UFC, for the NSAC decision and kill time debating who we thought should replace Overeem in the event he was unable to get licensed. At which point Chael Sonnen scolded the MMA media and reminded us that the Reem was innocent until proven guilty. While Overeem's lawyer wanted to make it very clear that despite other reports, Overeem did not test high for testosterone, but rather his testosterone to epitestosterone was off and he had a reasonable explanation as to why that happened. All that coupled with a eerily quiet response from the UFC, lead many to speculate that we would see some sort of UFC/NSAC shenanigans allowing the fight to continue as scheduled. Which had others asking how badly Overeem's participation could damage the sport?
To wit:
Maybe another #RallyforMarkHunt is in order?
While Alistair Overeem is left to see what the NSAC makes of his reasonable explanation on April 24th.

To wit:
"That's why, if Overeem is allowed to fight, as so many have speculated inside the industry, the biggest black eye won't be on dos Santos, but on the sport itself."
- Dave Meltzer
Well the speculation is over. As late Friday night Dana White announced via twitter that Frank Mir would be taking on Junior Dos Santos at UFC 146.
Mir had been expected to face off with Cain Velasquez in the co-main event, Velasquez will stay on the card versus a new opponent with Werdum, Bigfoot, Big Country, or Mitrione all being mentioned as possibilities. Maybe another #RallyforMarkHunt is in order?
While Alistair Overeem is left to see what the NSAC makes of his reasonable explanation on April 24th.

Fedor Emelianenko vs Pedro Rizzo set for June 21st.
Fedor Emelianenko & Pedro Rizzo are set to lock horns on an M1 card scheduled for June 21st at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg Russia. Fedor Emelianenko ruled the heavyweight division from his debut in may of 2000 to his first legitimate defeat in June of 2010. His 27 fight win streak will have him go down as one of the best fighters in the history of the sport. But back to back losses in Strikeforce followed by a couple of wins over lesser opposition, has seemed to have lit a fire under the stoic Russian as he has recently expressed interest in competing in the UFC. But instead Emelianenko will get Pedro "the Rock" Rizzo a once great heavyweight who has hung on way to long surviving on wins over guys like Gary Goodridge and Ken Shamrock while picking up losses to Gilbert Yvel, and Josh Barnett along the way.

Overeem's manager touts a reasonable explanation for positive drug test.
By now everyone is aware of Alistair Overeem's positive pre-fight drug test, his upcoming licensing hearing on April 24th and have probably weighed in on who they think should replace him in the event he's unable to get licensed. But maybe Chael's right and we have all gotten way ahead ourselves. Overeem's Lawyer seemed to think so when he spoke to HD net's Ron Kruck.

Ron Kruck via cagedinsider.com
“I spoke with Glenn Robinson, manager of Overeem and he says he is very respectful and is hopeful that he will be granted his license and the entire team is very confident that he will be facing Junior dos Santos come May 26th” said Kruck. “Now Robinson wanted to make it very clear that despite other reports, Overeem did not test high for testosterone, but rather his testosterone to epitestosterone was off and he has a reasonable explanation to why that is, which he will present to the commission next Tuesday.”What ever his excuse I hope it's better then his last one, cause it, was a doozy.

ESPN goes D.I.Y. with it's coverage of UFC 145: Jones vs Evans
MMA Live: Inside Jon Jones' Camp
The first segment is fine but it's the second video where we strike gold. ESPN + Skype + franklin Mcneil = gold. I think this video is indicative of how ESPN feels about the UFC in general right now. As this segment had bush league written all over it, I think it's safe to say we won't be seeing ESPN pour any major resources into mixed martial arts coverage anytime soon. But as long as they keep putting F-Mac on the Skype machine I'll keep watching.

Dana White vs Ben Askren on the viability of random drug testing in the UFC.
"I have 375 fighters in every country all over the world. The battle that I have to get these guys to get their fucking bout agreements back and show up for press is un-fucking believable. The fact that I have to make personal phone calls to tell guys to talk to the fucking press. Now I'm going to start making personal phone calls to go show up for random drug tests? The general public and the media need to grasp some fucking concept of reality, okay? The reality of us doing all the fucking things that we're doing, when we already have the gold standard in drug testing, and then trying to chase 375 guys all over the world to randomly test them too? It's impossible."
-Dana White
Bellator Welter Weight Champ Ben Askren must digress.
And Victor Conte a man convicted of running doping programs which have broken Olympic and professional records, has some thoughts of his own, on the feasibility of random drug testing in the UFC.
